Florida Legislature in full swing as 2006 session opens
Save Our Homes portability catches onTALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- March 13, 2006 -- The 2006 legislative session kicked off last Tuesday with Gov. Jeb Bush's State of the State address, in which he reiterated the administration's commitment to provide property owners tax rebates of up to $100 and to fund affordable housing.

His budget includes $243 million for the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Funds and an additional $302 million for assistance with hurricane-damaged housing. But if all of the funding pledged to the affordable housing trust funds is used for this purpose, there may be nearly $940 million dollars earmarked for Florida housing needs this legislative session.

Meanwhile, legislators debated various bills related to Save Our Homes (SOH) tax portability (allowing homeowners to take their SOH tax savings from a home sold to a home purchased), with several bills advancing (including Rep. Carl Domino's bill -- HB 33).
